The size of hat in the original pattern will fit a size medium/large head. If your head is on the smaller side, use size 3.5 or 3.75 mm dpns, following the pattern just the same. This is the hat knit with 3.5 mm needles:

I would say that’s a size small. I couldn’t find my 3.75 mm needles.

i love how it comes down to cover the ears! very 1920’s/30’s too.
Having a hat cover your ears really well is like a requirement in Winnipeg!
