I am planning to make these with a slightly denser wool to use as gaiters when hiking! I am going to make openings in the top for a drawstring and flare them out a bit more at the bottoms (by increasing more frequently) If they come out a bit bigger, all the better, since I will be wearing them over pants.

I plan to use circular needles - usually with more than 50 stitches, I can use 16" circulars no problem...I loathe using double pointed ones!

I'll let you know how they turn out!

just read a few of your blog entries!
sounds like you had one hell of a year in 2010. Hope things are better now. Keep the faith, I have been there, and it does get better eventually - depends on your attitude and outlook a lot; and support network!

Just a note about circular needles, as I'm making legwarmers on circular needles right now: I could only find 29 inch circulars, and a friend suggested that I google "Magic Circle method". If you google it you will find videos on how to tackle the issue of circulars that are too long. It works!

Great idea! I don't care for the magic loop method, either, but I've heard it depends a lot on which needles you're using.

To knit with circular needles; use two. Knit half the stitches on each one. Knit from one end of the needle to the other end. Let the other needle, with the other half stitches, hang down in back. Then pull out the needle, turn the project around and knit the other half of the row. There is also a new way to use one long needle and calls for pulling the center of the loop of the needle out from between stitches. I don't care for it.

You're right, I did forget to put my gauge here. Thank you for letting me know! Fortunately, I did write it down on Ravelry.
4 stitches and 5.5 rows= 1 inch in stockingette.

I can't wait to make these! I was in Chicago and bought some beautiful Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted to make myself some legwarmers. And these are perfect! I just have one question: what is your gauge? I have looked and looked and don't see it. I hope that I am not missing it... Thank you!

The measurement is from the very top of the legwarmer.

First off, these are totally cute!! The best leg warmer pattern I found after searching for a long time!! They wll be great for my best friend. now, I have a question... when you say "Work stockinette until piece measures 10 (10.5, 11) inches." do you mean from the very top of the warmer or from the start where you increased ?? Hope that makes sense. I am in the process of making them right now, hopefully you will see this very soon!! Thanks!
