Update: I made another one of these and it turned out even better!

I wanted a certain kind of hat and couldn’t find a pattern for it. So I decided to make my first ever hat pattern. I wanted a hat that would cover my ears, but not go too far down onto my forehead. And I wanted a round crown, not a point.

It was really a lot harder than I thought it would be. I knit and re-knit the crown of this hat so many times, I might as well have knit 5 hats.

I’m really, really proud of this accomplishment and have gotten lots of compliments on my hat. (Although, I may have shoved it in peoples faces and said “Look what I made! I made up the pattern in my brain!”) So please let me know if you knit it or like it in the comments, I would love that!

4mm dpns (double pointed needles)
1 skein of Paton Classic Wool Merino
9 stitch markers

Gauge: 5 stitches/ inch
6 rows/ inch

Abbreviations:
PM- place marker
KFB- knit into front and back of that stitch
k2tog- knit two together
ssk- slip, slip, knit

Cast on 108 stitches using the longtail cast on. 27 stitches on each of 4 dpns. PM at beginning of round.

Row 1: Purl 20, pm, purl 29, pm, purl 10, pm, purl 29, pm, purl 20. If you have several colours of stitch markers, it might help to have the beginning of the round marker one colour, the first and fourth another colour and the second and third another colour.

Row 2: KFB, knit to two stitches before next marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to one stitch before next marker, kfb, slip marker, knit 10, slip marker, kfb. Knit to two stitches before next marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to one stitch before beg. of round, kfb.

Row 3: Purl.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 two more times, then do row 2 once more. There should be four garter ridges including the one from the cast on.

Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: Same as row 2

Repeat these two rows until hat measures 3.5 inches from cast on edge. measure between the two markers that are 10 stitches apart. End on row 4.

Row 6: Knit to two stitches before first marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to two stitches before fourth marker, removing the second and third markers on the way, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit to end of round.
Row 7: Knit.

Repeat these two rows until hat has 96 stitches. It should be about 4.75 inches from the cast on edge. End on row 6.

Row 8: Knit 6, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 12, pm, knit 6. The beginning of round marker stays, but nothing is happening with it.

Row 9: (decrease round) *Knit to two stitches before next marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk. Repeat from * until after last ssk before beg. of round. Knit to end of round.

Rows 10 & 11: Knit.

Repeat rows 9, 10 and 11 until there are two stitches between markers. Stop after row 9. Knit one round, removing all markers except the one at the beginning of the round.

Next round: K2tog
Next round: Knit
Next round: K2tog
Pull yarn through remaining 4 stitches. Weave in ends.
